Last Thursday, the Macquarie University Applied Finance Society held its second event for the year – Empowering Possibilities: An Evening with CFA Society Sydney. The event’s purpose was to give attendees a comprehensive understanding of what the CFA Charter is, what the program structure is, and to understand its usefulness in pursuing a career in the investment management profession.
The event began with an opening address from the Applied Finance Society’s President, Yilmaz Ersoy, who briefly gave an introduction to the CFA Institute and CFA Society Sydney before moderating a panel consisting of experienced industry professionals Claire Vuong, CFA (Associate Director, Private Credit at FC Capital), Steve Madden, CFA (Investment Analyst at Cambooya Pty Ltd), Alex Lau, CFA, CAIA (Investment Consultant at Mercer), and Unnat Kohli, CFA, CPA (Aust.), MBA (Director, APAC Region for the CFA Institute). The panel discussed their motivations for obtaining the charter as well as the practicality of the CFA Program and concluded by discussing their involvement with their local CFA Society (CFA Society Sydney).
After the panel, Unnat Kohli outlined the structure of the CFA Program and highlighted the improvements that are being made to make the program more accessible and attractive to undertake. Janice Hon then concluded the presentation by discussing scholarships available to university students who want to undertake the CFA Program.
The event then broke out into a networking session where Applied Finance Society members were able to chat with one another and our industry guests to find out more about their careers and their journey through the CFA.
The Applied Finance Society would like to thank Michelle Granbery and Michaela Francis from CFA Society Sydney for making this event possible, Michelle Ouyang, CFA for attending, and to Cheryl Kwon for these brilliant photos as always!
